Where’s the Data? On the Grid! Transforming Science Education Researching Educational Use of the Grid Case Study: Cosmic Rays in the Classroom Computing Division - December 17, 2003 A Partnership of GriPhyN, iVDGL and QuarkNet GriPhyN, iVDGL & QuarkNet (in part) are supported by the National Science Foundation. The Globus Project & QuarkNet are supported in part by the US Department of Energy, Office of Science.

l QuarkNet - 60 US universities & labs quarknet.fnal.gov quarknet.fnal.gov l ALTA - Alberta l CHICOS - Los Angeles l CROP - Nebraska l WALTA - Seattle l.... Cosmic Rays in the Classroom

QuarkNet Engages Teachers & Students in Scientific Investigations l A partnership between physicists & teachers. (50 centers; 450 teachers; XXX HEP mentors) l A long-term program based on the LHC timeline. (In 5th year) l A program that contributes to providing highly qualified teachers in physics classes.

Cosmic Ray Grid Development Team l GriPhyN/iVDGL - M.Wilde, Y. Zhao l QuarkNet - M. Bardeen, T. Jordan, E. Quigg l Undergraduate Students - P. Nepywoda, UIUC; E. Peryshkin, UIUC; Y. Wu, MIT l High School Student - A. Behal, IMSA l Evaluators - E. Roberts, J. Young

Comments from SC2003 This project is a perfect example of how to use the grid in an application that undergraduates can understand. I would like to use the project as a case study for two lectures in a new course on cluster and grid computing. CS Professor, University of Arkansas “This is the best/only project ‘out there’ using the grid for education. I have been pushing for two years to get someone to do something like this in Canada." Senior Director, Network Projects, CANARIE “This is a great example of ‘meshing’ the grid with a real application for student use. It has a point.” CS Major, Arizona State University

l QuarkNet supplies GriPhyN with simplified but realistic problems. l GriPhyN provides a Virtual Data Laboratory to QuarkNet. l QuarkNet students and teachers generate diverse datasets and science applications. l iVDGL Grid2003 provides Grid execution environment (future: Open Science Grid). l GriPhyN and iVDGL get valuable user feedback. Mike Wilde for Grid Day at Lepton Photon Vision for Grid-QuarkNet Collaboration

Project Timeline l Initial portal prototype: January 26 l Product testing by teachers and students: February - June l Refine website: September l Pilot study: school year

Guidance for Grid Researchers l Constructs needed to support education use of the grid e.g., skins l Use of metadata l Use of namespace l Level of activity to expect from different students l School infrastructure needs and constraints l Security l Measuring educational results

Team Diversity l Computer Specialists l Educators l Engineers l High School Students & Teachers l Undergraduate Students l Graduate Students l Evaluators
