Line Shape Space Texture Value Color Form

Is the basis for most art. Created by a point moving in space. Can be thick or thin, curved or straight, spiraled or jagged. Can be used to create shading with hatching/ crosshatching. Can imply movement. Can be a simple contour.

In architecture line can be implied or direct as in the case of the Eiffel Tower and Golden Gate Bridge where the exposed steel clearly displays the lines. Here you can see the lines less directly, but can still see how they add to the futurist design.

Is what most art can be reduced to after lines. Can be geometric or organic. Dale Chihuly Frank Gehry

Shape & form are one of the most important parts of architecture. An interesting shape to the window or roof can really add to the design or make it.

Can be implied as in a painting or drawing or actual as in a sculpture or installation. Can be created through the use of linear and atmospheric perspective Pietro Perugino and Leonardo da Vinci

Andrea Zittel

Space in regards to architecture can be interior or exterior. A well-planned space allows for flow of movement and comfort.

Texture may be real or implied. Texture occasionally creates a pattern. Jean auguste dominique ingres Auguste Rodin

Texture can be seen the way it’s applied through a medium. Here Gustav Klimt uses colors, shapes, patterns, and lines to create the illusion of a textured gown.

Texture in architecture can be seen in the materials chosen or in the way they’re presented. Stone walls can be rough or smooth and wood floors can be either as well. Depending on the feeling the architect hopes to convey, the building may have a certain texture.

Is the range of colors from the lightest to the darkest. Is often referred to as shading. Helps to make a 2D form appear 3D. Is where the light hits the object. michelangelo

Audrey flack Raphael

The orientation of a building and the way parts of it are placed may allow for dramatic lights and or shadows. This can be intentional or accidental. As well, an architect may take into account how the lighting changes over 24 hours and how those shadows may add or detract.

Can be used to give an emotional response. Can be used to abstract a work or make it appear more realistic. Colors can draw emphasis to a design or create optical effects. All colors are made from the 3 primaries red, blue, and yellow. Colors have different tints/hues based on the amount of light and pigment in them. titian

michelangelo

Color in architecture can be used for emphasis, or as part of the overall design. Color is one of elements which the human eye is instinctually drawn to and as such it is always an important part of the design whether the decision is to use it minimally or in a neutral manner.

Is not unlike shape, but holds volume as well as mass. Is important when considering sculpture. Brancusi

Form is one of the most basic parts of architecture as by definition, buildings hold shape and volume. A key thing to think about though when considering form is whether or not the building is interesting from all sides. Here are some designs that fulfill that requirement.

When one looks closely, one can see evidence of all 7 elements being used in most building designs. As you begin to craft your houses try to make sure you’re taking into account these elements.
