ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson deBono’s Thinking Hats Goals: Students will learn different cultures around the world. Students will utilize resources to research information about different cultures around the world. Objectives: Content/Knowledge: Students will demonstrate that they know about different cultures through role playing. Process/Skills: Students will develop role playing scenarios using information from the internet and print sources. Values/Dispositions: Students will discuss the importance of knowing about and appreciating different cultures.

ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson deBono’s Thinking Hats Rationale: Living in the United States, students are surrounded by a huge variety of different cultures. It is important for students to learn that some cultures do things differently than they may do. With this knowledge, students can learn to respect and appreciate cultures different than their own. Objective

Students will research a culture different than their own, that interests them. They will use links provided on the Delicious Bookmarks link. Resources Needed: Computer Access with WIFI Delicious bookmarks link Objective

Intuitive

Students will use their research and findings to pick out one key difference between their culture and the one they researched that bothered them. For instance, they may not agree with children working at younger ages in other countries. They will explain the difference, why it bothered them, and why they appreciate how their own culture is different in that aspect. Resources Needed: Computer Access with WIFI Intuitive

Positive/Strengths

Positive/Strengths Students will discuss in their groups the positives of knowing about different cultures. They will share at least 2 responses with the class. Resources Needed: Computer Access with WIFI Space for students to meet in groups

Negatives/Weaknesses

Students will then discuss in their groups the negatives of not knowing about different cultures. They will identify at least 2 negatives and share their responses with their peers and teacher. Resources Needed: Computer Access with WIFI Space for students to meet in groups Negatives/Weaknesses

Creative

Creative After learning about how two cultures differ, students will work in groups to develop different skits. They will have to come up with a skit of how a certain thing is done in the U.S. and another one of how the same thing is done in their selected country. Their peers will be responsible for identifying the difference. Resources Needed: Computer Access with WIFI Space to perform skits

Thinking About Thinking

Students will brainstorm in small groups why some cultures have the traditions/customs that they do. They will come up with their own theories and ideas and share with the class. Resources Needed: Paper for brainstorming Writing Utensils Space for students to work individually
