PERSUASIVE WRITING / ACROSS THE CURRICULUM You can use the valuable skill of writing persuasively throughout the school day. For Example, your social studies teacher may assign an editorial cartoon about a social problem Your math teacher may require convincing proof from someone mathematical fact. In science, you may need to argue for or against some scientific theory. In or our of school, you may need to write persuasive letters to convince other to cake a certain action. You may also need to be persuasive on writing tests. You model and tips at the end of this chapter will help you. What’s Ahead Social Studies: Creating an Editorial Cartoon Math: Presenting a Proof Science: Drafting: Supporting a Theory Practical Writing: Drafting a Persuasive Letter

SOCIAL STUDIES : CREATING AN EDITORIAL CARTOON A picture is worth a thousand words, especially when the picture is an editorial cartoon. An editorial cartoon is a drawing that pokes fun at a political or social problem. The following Editorial carton was created for a social studies class. While the paragraph explains the social problem, the cartoon does most of the persuading. What position is the cartoon taking? What sound reasoning is used in the paragraph? What evidence is presented in the cartoon? What alternatives could be considered?

WRITING TIPS Before You Write… Choose a problem you care about. Think of things that worry you about your city, the country, or the world. Do your research. Read articles and gather information, Think of Symbols. Consider symbols to use in your cartoon. In the example, the oil well symbolize the oil industry. Use pictures as models. Find a picture of an oil well, for example, if you need to draw an oils well.

WRITING TIPS During your writing… Establish your position. Explain clearly how you feel about the problem. Explain the problem. Tell why the problem concerns you. Use sound reasoning and strong evidence, Include consideration of alternatives. Draw your Cartoon. Concentrate on one or two images. Write an caption below the cartoon, if necessary. If your cartoon needs explaining, create an sentence or paragraph that will get your point across.

WRITING TIPS After you’ve written a first draft….. Review your opening explanation. Make sure that all of your ideas are clear. Study your cartoon. Redraw any parts that could be better. TRY IT!!! Create an editorial cartoon about a social problem Include your position, sound reasons, evidence, and alternatives.

EXAMPLES 1. This cartoon is showing two kids. An American kid and a Chinese kid. This is a stereotype explaining that American kids aren’t worried about an education. all they ever think about is twitter, Facebook, texting, tattoos etc. that’s why they aren’t as smart as Asian kids. Asian kids are smarter because they actually do think about their education and that’s all they focus on.
