1.3 Atomic Theory
1. John Dalton’s atomic theory - Matter is made up of small particles called atoms - Atoms cannot be created, destroyed or divided - All atoms of the same element are identical in mass and size, but are different from other elements - Compounds are atoms of different elements linked together
2. JJ Thomson - Discovered negatively charged particles called electrons - “Raisin Bun” model...positive bun and negative raisins
3. Ernest Rutherford - Discovered the nucleus, a tiny positively charged centre of an atom - Nucleus had positive protons and neutral neutrons
4. Niels Bohr - Electrons surround the nucleus in shells and have a particular amount of energy
Atom – smallest particle of an element Subatomic particles – consist of electrons, protons and neutrons
Positive protons and negative electrons are attracted to each other Equal number of protons and electron in an atom so the overall charge is 0
