1.3 Atomic Theory

1. John Dalton’s atomic theory - Matter is made up of small particles called atoms - Atoms cannot be created, destroyed or divided - All atoms of the same element are identical in mass and size, but are different from other elements - Compounds are atoms of different elements linked together

2. JJ Thomson - Discovered negatively charged particles called electrons - “Raisin Bun” model...positive bun and negative raisins

3. Ernest Rutherford - Discovered the nucleus, a tiny positively charged centre of an atom - Nucleus had positive protons and neutral neutrons

4. Niels Bohr - Electrons surround the nucleus in shells and have a particular amount of energy

Atom – smallest particle of an element Subatomic particles – consist of electrons, protons and neutrons

 Positive protons and negative electrons are attracted to each other  Equal number of protons and electron in an atom so the overall charge is 0
