Texas Hunter Education Exam Review

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service provides federal aid to TPWS to support different hunting related projects through taxes on firearms, archery equipment, and ammunition

Why is it important to become certified in hunter education? To reduce hunting and shooting-related accidents, To develop safe and ethical behavior To comply with state law

To learn about hunting and to become an ethical hunter, you much have the right ATTITUDE!

The 3 basic parts of a modern firearm are: Action Stock Barrel

The first step to becoming a responsible hunter is knowing your firearm and how to use it safely

Use only ammunition that exactly matches the caliber or gauge marked on the barrel of your firearm

The first rule of firearm safety is always point the muzzle in a safe direction.

Firearms should be stored unloaded, lightly- oiled in a locked location and separate from ammunition.

The action of a firearm is made up of parts that load, fire, and eject the cartridge or shotshell.

A safety is a device that blocks the action to prevent the firearm from firing.

Knowing your firearm’s range is critical because it allow you to determine whether or not you’re able to make a clean kill, and to know the distances your firearm could cause injury.

Each year before going hunting, all hunters should review the Outdoor Annual, which is updated every year to learn about changes in hunting laws.

Good marksmanship is hitting the spot where you are aiming on your target again and again.

Hitting the spot where you are aiming when hunting is important for a clean, ethical kill.

An ethical hunter not only tries to bring home the wild game he or she is seeking, but also tries to cause the least amount of pain and suffering to the animal.

You should always plan your hunt and hunt your plan.

Understanding where the vital organs are located inside the animal you are hunting will help you aim at the right spot to shoot at for a quick, clean and ethical kill.

If a game animal requires it, a tag should be completed and secured to the animal immediately after the kill.

The reason for hunting laws and regulations is For conservation of natural resources Providing equal opportunity for all hunters To ensure public safety

When using a firearm or a bow, a broadside shot is the most effective shot angle on deer, antelope, and other large game animals.

When approaching a downed deer or other large animal after your shot, you should approach cautiously, stop a short distance away and watch the chest cavity for any breathing movement.

Cold does not cause meat to spoil. However, dirt, heat, and moisture will cause meat to spoil.

Before climbing into or out of an elevated blind, you should always completely unload your firearm.

Common causes of hunting incidents are: Hunter judgement mistake Safety rule violation Lack of control and practice

The worst angle for a shot at the vital organs on deer is from the rear end.

The 3 most important things you need for survival is Food, water, and shelter

The most ethical way to transport a harvested deer is legally quartered, packed in an ice chest with proper tag included.

If there is another animal behind the one you are hunting, the ethical thing to do is to wait for the animals to move apart so the one you want is alone and gives you a clear, safe, and ethical shot.

When hunters are walking in a group, the most important thing for each hunter to do is keep their muzzles pointed in a safe direction and pointed away from each other.

The two-handed carry provides the best muzzle control of the field carry methods.

If crossing a fence while hunting alone, you should unload, place the firearm on the ground, muzzle covered, pointed away from you on the other side of the fence, and then cross.

While safely loading or unloading a firearm, you should always point the muzzle in a safe direction.

The safest way to transport a firearm is to unload it, open the action, store it in a case with ammunition stored separately.

A hunter’s safe “zone of fire” is the area in which a hunter can safely shoot.

You should always wear an approved fall- arrest system (5-point safety harness) while climbing into a tree stand and hunting from a tree stand.

To raise and lower a firearm or bow into an elevated stand, a hunter should use a haul line.

Carrying capacity is the largest number of animals that the habitat can support

The three questions you should ask yourself before taking any shot at an animal are: Is it safe? Is it legal? Is it ethical?

According to Aldo Leopold, the “father of wildlife management”, ethical behavior is “doing the right thing when no one else is watching, even when doing the wrong thing is legal.

A responsible hunter is one who makes every effort to not waste meat or any usable part of the game harvested. A responsible hunter is one who makes every effort to make a quick, clean kill A responsible hunter leaves the land better that he/she found it A responsible hunter follows all game laws and regulations

Responsible hunters treat both game and non- game animals with respect.

When tagging white-tailed deer, you must: – Cut out the correct month and day marking on the tag – Use a pen to write the name of the property and the county where you are hunting – Complete the Harvest Log for White-tailed Deer found on the back of the license

A Texas Game Warden can inspect private property for suspected violations of hunting and fishing laws and regulations.

Parts of a Hunting Plan: – Where and with whom you plan to hunt – Specific directions of the route to your hunting area – When you expect to return home

The safest and most important clothing choice for hunting is hunter orange, blaze orange, daylight fluorescent orange.

The international emergency signal for distress is: – 3 ground fires evenly spread out – 3 shots from your firearm – 3 blasts from a whistle

Hypothermia can be prevented by staying dry and dressing properly

Drinking water is a good treatment for heat exhaustion

Remember that land owners have the right to grant or deny permission to anyone who asks to hunt on their land.

A wildlife habitat must include: food, water, cover, and space in a suitable arrangement.
