Before BP On April 14, 1909, the Anglo- Persian Oil Company was formed and was located in the Middle East. In 1935, it was renamed the Anglo- Iranian Oil Company. In 1954, it became the British Petroleum Company (BP).
The Early Years of BP In 1959, BP expanded from the Middle East to Alaska. In 1969, BP became the first company to strike oil in the North Sea. In 1979, there was an Islamic Revolution that forced BP to withdraw form Iran.
The Exchanging of Leadership Sir Peter Walters became Chairman of BP in His reign ended in 1989 when he was replaced by Robert Horton. John Browne then became the Chairman in 1995.
The Beginning of a Less Temporary Leadership John Browne becomes the Chief Executive of BP in June of He adopted a sunburst logo to promote its commitment to the environment. The company seems to be environmental until its first accident in September of 2004.
BP Safety Failures September An accident at the refinery in Texas City, Texas kills two workers and injures a third due to a lack of safety measures. March The same refinery has an explosion that kills 15 workers and injures over 170. The accident was a result of the lack of safety measures.
BP Safety Failures Cont’d April The labor department fines BP for unsafe conditions in a refinery near Toledo, Ohio. October The Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration fines BP $87.4 million for 709 safety violations in the Texas City, Texas refinery. March The Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration fines BP $3 million for 62 safety violations in the refinery near Toledo, Ohio.
BP Environmental Failures March A pipeline in Alaska leaks which ends up covering two acres of snow in oil. This was the largest spill on the Northern Slope. April 20, The Deepwater Horizon oil rig explodes causing a gush of oil that is the largest ocean based oil spill in American history. May A power failure causes 500 barrels of oil to leak from the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System which is managed by BP.
BP Just Being Stupid October BP admits to manipulating the price of propane and pays $303 million to settle the charges. March A Russian environmental agency raids a BP office building in Siberia. Several workers were arrested for industrial espionage.
