AUTONOMOUS LEARNING What is it about? Beatriz Lupiano March 2010

Beatriz Lupiano2 What I made today

March 2010Beatriz Lupiano3 Not much, except… …it can lead to this: Pretty amazing, huh?

March 2010Beatriz Lupiano4 How can that happen?  Well, I could take an Origami course  But I don’t want to commit to yet another scheduled activity…

March 2010Beatriz Lupiano5 Here’s what I did then:  I bought a step-by-step origami guide.  Great!! It has pictures, instructions, and covers from the most basic folds to one or two advanced figures (like the swan in slide 3).

March 2010Beatriz Lupiano6 First day:  Frustration  I couldn’t figure out the instructions  Or, for that matter, what I’d done wrong…

March 2010Beatriz Lupiano7 Second day

March 2010Beatriz Lupiano8 Third and subsequent days

March 2010Beatriz Lupiano9 Today (15 days after 1st attempt)  Hmmm….I’ll try again with the proper paper.  Mum, have a look at this, please.  (about half an hour later) What’s this symbol for? (I showed her in the book) What’s this fold here? How do you do it? But this is the centre. No, it’s not –this symbol says you have to push. But…(you get the idea) Finally…  Look at the first picture. That doesn’t look like a square. You need a rectangle.  Ahhhh…Let’s see now…(about another half hour later…) Look!!!

March 2010Beatriz Lupiano10 Great!!! Now I can move on to the next basic fold…  ….or not  Is it the same feeling of frustration?

March 2010Beatriz Lupiano11 NOT AT ALL!!!! Now I know:  That I need to pay attention to the pictures as much as the words  That I can do it; I’ve done the other kind of fold, after all…  I can ask for help  I can recall the help I got and analyse what I’m doing wrong

March 2010Beatriz Lupiano12 So here are some of my thoughts from this experience: Autonomous learning…  Comes in different forms –a self- study guide is just one.  Doesn’t exclude other people; I don’t have to figure out everything by myself.  Is built over time; with each attempt I can learn something new.

March 2010Beatriz Lupiano13 Autonomous learning…  Happens better when I keep a positive attitude –I can learn from my mistakes (but a feeling of frustration is also natural –I just need to get past it).  To learn from my mistakes, I can analyse all the steps I took and compare them with other steps I’ve taken or read about to understand what I may have done wrong (and right!).

March 2010Beatriz Lupiano14 That’s the end of this step  Many more will follow in my life…  I know this, because there have been previous ones…  I’ll try to write and share them with you.
