Matt DeSimone and Jackie Homberg Endangered Animal: Ostrich

Impact on other organisms, the environment and us. The Ostriches are the largest of the birds standing at 8ft tall and weighing around 280lbs. Living in the dry African grasslands where they have to run many miles for food. Ostrich’s have many enemies including Jackals and Hyenas. Around only 15% are likely to survive.

African Wildlife Foundation The African Wildlife Adoption Center cost is 25 dollars to adopt an ostrich. The money provided to the foundation goes to help protect the ostrich population in Africa. The foundation helps to keep ostrich eggs from being hunted. After adopting the species from African Wildlife Adoption Center, they follow you up by sending you information on the animal and there progress.

Ostrich Characteristics Ostrich is one of the largest birds on the earth. They will feed on grasses, shrubbery, berries, seeds an also small insects. Can be up to 8 ft tall. Weigh between 240 and 300 pounds. Life span around 40 years. Found mostly in northern Africa. Ostrich feathers very popular.

Why Ostrich’s are Endangered In the 18th century, ostrich feathers were so popular in ladies fashion that the ostrich disappeared from all of northern Africa because of hunting. In 1838 Ostrich farming began decreased the number of ostrich’s. Today Ostriches are farmed for their feathers, meat, skin and eggs.
