Writing Review (5 paragraph essay) 1: Introduction (Begins w/ hook and ends with Thesis*) 2,3,4: Body Paragraphs w/ 3 main points 5: Conclusion (restate Thesis and end w/ bang!)  Thesis: Statement of Purpose. (Last sentence of your introduction) Ex: Topic- Explain the biggest change of starting middle school: My biggest change since starting middle school was making new friends. Ex: Topic- Persuade new 6 th graders to choose JWJ for middle school: JWJ is the best choice for middle school because of its academics, multi-cultural environment, and its rich history.

Persuasive Writing: Choose a position on a topic. Write to express your opinion and convince someone else to agree with you and take action. Main Differences:

1.Opposition Briefly Dismissed… (OBD) (AKA “The Counter-Argument”) A powerful argument always considers the other side’s strongest point. The OBD is part of your introduction. It acknowledges the opposite point of view’s strongest point and dismisses it. Ex: Even though people may like the convenience of going to a local school, JWJ provides students with experiences that make it worth driving across town to go to school.

(Example) PROMPT: The principal of your school is considering installing candy and soda machines in the cafeteria. Think about the reasons why the principal should or should not install candy and soda machines in the cafeteria. Now write to convince your principal of your opinion on installing these machines.

Possible Introduction: Over the past twenty years, obesity rates among children have quadrupled. Now, nearly 25 million children are overweight or obese. Two of the direct causes of this alarming epidemic are candy and soda machines. Even though installing candy and soda machines in the cafeteria could raise much needed funds for our school, we should not have them because the negative effects outweigh the possible positive ones. Installing these sugar shacks in our cafeteria is a bad idea because they increase students’ weight, decrease their health, and create discipline problems. Hook/Engager O.B.D./Counter- Argument Thesis: (Opinion with 3 main points)

Prompt: Convince your principal whether or not students should ALWAYS be allowed to work in groups. 1. List reasons/arguments for each one. 2. Choose and circle which position you will support. 3. Put 3 *s by the 3 reasons you would use as your 3 main points/arguments. 4.On the other side, put an * by the reason you would mention as your OBD 5.Formulate a Thesis! (We should/should not work in groups because ____, _____, and _____.) See example on the next page Work in Groups ____________________ Do Not Work in Groups ____________________

(Example) PROMPT: The principal of your school is considering installing candy and soda machines in the cafeteria. Think about the reasons why the principal should or should not install candy and soda machines in the cafeteria. (Example) PROMPT: The principal of your school is considering installing candy and soda machines in the cafeteria. Think about the reasons why the principal should or should not install candy and soda machines in the cafeteria. Soda Machines at School  Make money for school  Give more options to kids  Make other lines shorter Do not install Soda Machines at School  Increased calories= increased weight  Will not solve $ problems  Caffeine could cause behavior problems  Would choose soda over more nutritious options = decrease in health Thesis: Installing soda machines in our cafeteria is a bad idea because they increase students’ weight, decrease their health, and create discipline problems. Your paper should look something like this.

Persuasive Writing: 3 body paragraphs Always include:  Topic Sentence (State the reason/argument)  Support it! o Give 2 examples/details of that support  Support it Again! o Give 2 examples/details of that support Use transition words/phrases to take you to the next paragraphs or from the previous paragraph. Main Point Support FEDIFEDI FEDIFEDI FEDIFEDI FEDIFEDI
