12/8/14 Objective: What is the difference between sexual and asexual reproduction Do Now: When you fall and scrape your knee, what happens to the cut over time?

The production of offspring from one parent. Results in offspring that are genetically identical to the parent.

Mitosis Cells create new cells by dividing in two through a process called mitosis Used to grow and repair damaged tissues

Binary Fission Binary Fission: one organism divides itself into 2 which results in 2 genetically identical organisms

Budding Budding: a bud is produced by the parent, breaks off and grows into a new, genetically identical organism 5Duc

Spore Formation Spore Formation: Spores made by mitosis develop into a new organism after dispersal (Ex: fungus, algae)

Regeneration If an organism loses a body part, it can regrow that part

Sexual Reproduction -2 parents are involved in the production of offspring -Genetic material from each parent combines producing genetically different offspring
