Social Problems of Delinquency and Crime Delinquency and crime are major social problems of modern society Gang violence has become a major problem in the last two decades in cities of all sizes Social workers are playing prominent roles in administrative and practice positions in federal, state, and local correctional programs

Correctional Services Social Work and Corrections Throughout history, punishments, especially corporal and capital, have often been offered in answer to antisocial behavior Penitentiary system developed to give offender a change to think, have a ‘change of heart,’ and ‘mend his ways’ through mediation in solitary confinement

Social Processes Corrections is one of four social processes utilized in the administration of criminal justice: Law enforcement Prosecution and defense Judicial process Corrections – responsible for administrating the assigned penalties

Role of Social Worker Helps the offender change patterns of behavior Work with them to relate constructively to others and become socially acceptable. This is done through two avenues: Working with the individual to help him or her change through better understanding of self and by tapping the person’s own strengths and resources Modification of environment to bring about a more healthy social climate in which to live

Social Work Practice in Corrections Settings: Institutional Noninstitutional Social work process consists of four parts: Social study (facts) Assessment (defining and evaluating) Treatment (problem solving) Termination
