Tides

What are they: Tides are daily changes in level of ocean surface. Discovered by Sir Isaac Newton. Causes: Gravitational pull of the moon and sun on the earth causing the waters to rise and fall

High Tide Occurs when the ocean on the side of the earth facing towards and away from the moon bulges.

Low Tides Are formed halfway between the two high tides, and are formed because ocean water flows away from areas of low tide towards area of high tide.

Spring Tide Occur during new and full moon. The earth, sun and the moon are all aligned. Due to the increased gravitational pull tides are much higher and lower at these times.

Neap Tides Occurs during periods of first and third quarters of the moon. The sun and moon are at right angles to the earth. Therefore their gravitational pull acts against one another causing small tidal range.

Fundy Bay tidal range
