How did William gain control of England? 4: Describe the Problems. 5: Explain how William solved them.

THINKING TASK Imagine that you are William in You have just won the Battle of Hastings. What problems do you now face as the new King of England?

KING BARONS (Tennants in chief) KNIGHTS (Under tennants) PEASANTS Promise..

Short term and long term problems Short term problems are problems which need to be dealt with immediately Long term problems are problems which will take longer to sort out.

William’s problems as the new King of England. Many English Lords did not want William to be King. They could not be trusted to keep their parts of the country under control. William needed their support to control the land William needed to collect taxes but he had to find out how much money England had and who owned what. London is the capital city and William really needed to take control of it quickly. Also, many of Harold’s surviving troops were still in London. At Dover Castle in the south of England, many English soldiers were still taking a stand against William. They were also blocking the Norman’s route back to Normandy, should they need to return. There was still a threat of invasion from Norway, along with an English rebellion in the north of England.

Construct Poster of Williams problems after he took control… What were his problems… How did he solve some of the Problems… One group will present them at the start of next lesson. - STOP MOANING ---- HAVE SOME LAND - STOP WHINGING --- THE KNIGHTS WILL GET YOU… - STOP PROTESTING – THE BARONS WILL KILL YOU.. - GET LAND, FIGHT FOR WILLIAM… - GIVE ME MONEY…GET LAND! What were his problems… How did he solve some of the Problems…
