MAKING CONNECTIONS We have to make this work!

What will success look like ?

Remembering the Scarman report The community felt no trust in the police They had no voice Diverse communities would not report crime Resentment was allowed to build up There was disproportionate use of Stop and Search Dont put the politics before what works

Partnership Working

Remember Young People

Through the eyes of a young person “Safer Neighbourhoods is only for older people” ‘police pick on us!’ “ the police have a bad attitude towards young people” “they don’t take our crimes seriously, so there’s no point in reporting” “all police are racist!” This is your starting point!

Talk with the community not at the community! Public consultation and public meetings needs to offer equality and empowerment Community participation and involvement should see the end of theatre style seating

School and College Forums

Really using social media Cost effective Engage the un-engageable More accessibility to decision makers End the usual suspects trap Attracting a new audience

Not a gift - training needed please Group work Consultation Understanding and relating to young people and hard to reach communities Problem solving Collating of public opinion into qualitative reports Understanding the roles and skills of other agencies “ We need this -go and do it!!!!!!!”

Partnerships, Policies and Politics working together!

No just a leaflet

…and what do residents want!! Plain English only- speak one language Don’t overcomplicate Make and keep things simple Reach people - don’t expect them to come to you

Remember the Policing Pledge ?

Neighbourhood Agreement & Neighbourhood Policing – the perfect partners Increases visibility and accessibility of neighbourhood policing team Increases the communication with, and involvement of the community in policing decisions enables the community to influence how neighbourhood policing is delivered and to set community priorities Reinforces and clarifies key messages and roles Embeds partnership working

Serious about community involvement?- Invest in the delivery Meet and work with people where they feel safe and comfortable Respond to the needs and abilities of the individual when devising methods Make meetings and focus groups dynamic, rewarding and fun Support the communities to take an active role or a passive role as appropriate Offer incentives and rewards for offering their time

From this investment comes :- Trust Ownership Transparency A new generation with a buy in to PCCs BUT this isn’t easy

Remember we are dealing with real people- real issues!

But never should we forget …. The role of young people Older people and people in care The diverse communities The barriers to engagement hindering individuals or communities playing a role Some people are just not interested

Consultation- what to consider One size doesn’t fit all Are you reaching the right people? Are you scary? Keep it simple Are you asking the right question? - worklessness, neighbourhood priorities, Cohesion, …..

What gets people involved? Changing their environment Learning new skills Getting activities for their children Feeling a sense of community spirit Feeling safer Being heard

The alternative

Lets discuss..... Any questions? How will you involve the community? How should a PCC raise their profile and encourage voters next term? What are the pitfalls of getting this wrong? 43
