News Day in an hour Learning objective: to be able to make a news report together to a deadline

What is NEWS DAY? BBC video - pupils explain what News Day is all about

In your teams…..produce a TV/radio bulletin of five stories. Each member of the group is a reporter who needs to produce 1 report lasting 20 seconds. How many words in a second? Three! So your script should be how many words? 60 words 3 x news, 1 x sport and 1 x weather report.

What do you do first? 1.Have an editorial meeting pick stories to cover depending on which audience you are targetting. Examples: secondary school children; 20- to 30-year-olds; Newsround audience Choose your stories; assign reporters to each story.

Writing the news

Finished writing? Now check! Your reports are safe and legal before you broadcast them. The school is responsible for the material published as part of School Report. Avoid crime stories and celebrity gossip. Use only first names of people below 18. Check spelling and grammar.

Practise presenting Use your normal speaking voice, but speak slowly and clearly. Smile, it makes your voice sound friendly Pause between each news story Time each other – each report has to be 20 seconds

Peer assess Listen to the bulletins of the other teams and answer the following questions: Which audience do you think the bulletin was it aimed at? Why do you think that? What did you think of the stories chosen? Would they appeal to the target audience? Was it written to time? What worked well/not so well?

De-briefing What did you learn from the one-hour exercise? What could you do differently or better when you have half a day to prepare on News Day? Did you enjoy yourselves?!
