1 What is a treaty?

1 An agreement, usually in writing, that settles a dispute between groups. Home

2 Who founded the colony of New Netherland? Why?

2 The Dutch West India Company (DWIC) founded New Netherland as a fur trading place.

3 How was the Dutch colony different from those of other European nations?

3 It had a director instead of a governor, it was set up as a business instead of for homes, and they bargained for their land instead of taking it.

4 What groups eventually settled in New Netherland?

4 English, Scandinavian, German and Portuguese were some of the groups that settled.

5 In what ways did the Dutch deal with their labor shortage?

5 In 1626, the Dutch brought over enslaved Africans.

6 How did New Netherland become New York?

6 The King of England claimed that New Netherland belonged to England because it was found by an Englishman (Hudson). He gave the land to his brother, James, the Duke or York and Albany. In 1664, England attacked New Netherland. New Amsterdam surrendered, ending Dutch rule and becoming New York.

7 What remnant of Dutch culture still exists today?

7 10-pin bowling was invented by the Dutch because regular bowling (9-pin) was not allowed on Sundays. So they added a pin!.

8 Why was the capital of New Netherland named New Amsterdam?

8 It was named after the capital of the Netherlands.

9 Why did the DWIC have a difficult time getting Dutch colonists from Holland?

9 At the time, Holland had religious freedom and was the richest nation in Europe.
