Characterization and SVA Day 20

Objectives Understand and Identify Characterization in The Necklace. Identify and understand Subject Verb Agreement. Homework: 1. LotF chapters 5-8 and study guide by Friday 2. Check Google Classroom for lecture notes and assignments 3. VCR 4 flashcards due Tuesday

Warm Up Compose three sentences and identify SVA. Each sentence should have one vocabulary word in it.

Brace Yourselves. Quizzes are coming.

VCR 3 Quiz The first person in each row needs to gather and distribute all of the chrome books. DO NOTHING AFTER YOU GET ONE! I will tell you when and where to go. Return the laptop when finished and finish reading “The Necklace”. If you finish, fill out a character chart for the protagonist. 20 Min.

Close Reading Week 3 Get into your groups. Compare answers and use your rationale to explain how. You must have a rationale. Only talk about the topic. Take your LotF study guides out and put them on your desk.

Group Practice Take turns Reading “The Necklace” in your blue books pg. 74. Annotate for theme and characterization. As you read, look for examples from the text to complete your characterization chart on the story's main character, Mathilde. Stop reading at the line that starts with “The day of the party arrived…”

After the reading… On the reverse side, answer the discussion questions on the following slide. Write the name of everyone in your group at the top right of the paper. Label it “The Necklace Group Questions Part II”.

1. Does "The Necklace" have a moral? What is it, if it does? 2. What's your verdict on the story's ending? Does it affect you emotionally? 3. If the story hadn't ended with a twist, how do you think it would have ended? Could it have ended in any other way and been as effective (and short) a story? Discussion Questions
