2.4 Settlement of the Middle Colonies Lesson Objective: To understand how Middle Colonies were founded. Essential Question: Why did the middle colonies develop differently than the southern or northern colonies?

The Dutch in New Netherland New Amsterdam New Netherland – Hudson river valley, NJ, DE Mostly built on Fur trade Very tolerant – Brought in Settlers from across Europe plus African slaves Better relations with Native Americans – More interested in trade then in conquest

English in the Middle Colonies English take over New Amsterdam – English fleet sails into harbor Dutch surrender without firing a shot – Renamed New York after the proprietor James the Duke of York New Jersey is also established Quakers in Pennsylvania – Won for Royal support during the Civil War Colony was payment – Pennsylvania and eventually Delaware Delaware 1682

Quaker Pennsylvania Founded by William Penn – Quaker- religious minority, pacifist – Not liked by Catholics, Anglicans, or Puritans “Holy Experiment” – Freedom of religion – Every man was given 50 acres and could vote – Built city of Philadelphia – Delaware is given separate legislature (but shared gov with PA)

Native Americans and Middle Colony Economies What major Quaker belief would have the biggest impact on relations on Native Americans? Pacifism – Native were paid for their land – Trade was regulated so they weren’t taken advantage of – Court was set up to deal with conflicts between natives and settlers No major conflicts for 50 years! Brought in colonists from through out Europe- mostly Germans Huge population growth Didn’t always live up to his expectations – Some fighting with natives – Cheating natives in treaties – Not everyone was a Quaker
