“Connections to the Learning Community” Three Aspects We’ll Explore…… Collaboration Leadership Technology

Students Staff, Administration Parents, families, community members & resources District, state, regional offices and agencies Professional associations, national resources International, global resources Learning Community

Collaboration & the Learning Community Staff & administration Build relationships to achieve your goals Parents, families Build relationships – volunteers, will support the program Community Links – public libraries, colleges, businesses, civic organizations, etc. District, state, regional offices and agencies Provide leadership, resource sharing (e.g. MDK12), monitoring

Collaboration, pt. 2 Professional associations, national resources EMAAAC, MASL, AASL, ALA, AECT Provide advocacy, leadership, professional growth & networking International & Global resources International professional organizations, Internet

Leadership & the Learning Community Staff & administration Be the leader; SIT Team, teaching staff, being the go-to person Parents, families Provide after hours services, programs for families to promote reading, technology, & information literacy Need full staffing/funding to implement this!!!! Community Public libraries, colleges, businesses, civic organizations, etc. Can contribute to your school – tutoring programs, authentic learning District, state, regional offices and agencies Provide leadership for advocacy to promote library media to community leaders, politicians

Leadership, pt. 2 Professional associations, national resources EMAAAC, MASL, AASL, ALA, AECT Provide advocacy like district level folks, mentor new professionals, encourage active participation by other colleagues International & Global resources See above – only on a international scale & should support national organizations

Technology Libraries have always been leaders!

Technology & the Learning Community Staff & administration Be a conduit of information if not a leader for the school It’s a media center – emphasis is shifting to technology & will increase Parents, families Provide tech workshops Disseminate info about online resources Media website Community Provide access to equipment for technology – rural areas often use school libraries for entire community Give and take – they can provide resources (e.g. Naval Academy LCDs, AAACPL databases) & you can provide links to community resources – arrange online links (e.g. MD archives)

Technology, pt. 2 District, state, regional offices and agencies Distance learning opportunities Online databases – MDK12 Online info from counties & state (e.g. Natural Resources Dept. Professional associations, national resources Share info via conferences, lists, etc Library of Congress & other online gov’t resources International & Global resources Internet & more

Technology Prepare 21 st century learners! Information literacy – a necessity Library media centers generally have what’s needed to be on the forefront. Be a media split personality – ½ literature, ½ tech BE the change.
