WHAT IS ADVENT??  From Latin- adventus- meaning “coming”  Celebrates the three comings of Jesus Past(History)- Jesus was born 2000 years ago in Bethlehem Present(Mystery)- Jesus comes to us now through the Eucharist, each other, and through prayer Future(Majesty)- Jesus will come again(Second Coming)

WHAT IS ADVENT?? CONT.  Day of the week varies, so the length varies  ALWAYS 4 Sundays

THE ADVENT WREATH  Symbolic for Catholics  Way Christians all over the world prepare for the coming of Jesus  Adopted it from the Pagan symbol  Christian tradition that symbolizes the passage of the four weeks of Advent in the liturgical year

THE GREENERY  True wreath made of true greenery( evergreen trees)  In a circle to symbolize God’s love is never-ending; It has neither a beginning nor an end.

PURPLE CANDLES  3 Purple candles  Sign of royalty  Sign of repentance  Jesus is our king

PINK CANDLE  One pink Candle  Gaudette Sunday- Latin for “rejoice”  3 rd Sunday- sign of hope; waiting comes to an end

WHITE CANDLE  5 th candle  Not all Christians put this candle in the middle  Represents Christ (He is always there, no matter what)  Lit on Christmas Eve or on Christmas Day  Symbolizes Christmas  Known as the “Christ Candle”

LIGHT  4 Candles (sometimes 5)  One lit on each Sunday of Advent  Symbolizes that Jesus is the light of the world
