Cabinets -2- Cabinet Details & Joinery

Construction Joints u Used to increase strength u Improve looks u Complex joints more common in higher quality cabinets u Joint design aids in mass production

Construction Joints Butt Joint - used to make boards wider, simple process, not a strong Tongue & Groove - requires special edge machining, makes strong joint for wide boards Finger Joint - means to joint wood end-to-end

Construction Joints u Doweled Joint - joining end grain with surface grain, strong joint used for web frames u Mortise & Tendon (blind) - strong, takes special machining to manufacture mortise & tendon u Dado - strong connection end to surface, used in cabinet frames and drawer construction

Construction Joints u Rabbet Joint - a type of corner joint or connection, simple u Miter Joint - 45 degree cut for a corner joint, difficult in joining, eliminates wood end grain at corners u Dovetail - special equipment to make, very strong, used in drawer construction and other corners construction

Shelving u Upper/wall cabinets (refer to Fig pg 283) –commonly 2 shelves –adjustable verses fixed u Lower/base cabinets (refer to Fig pg 288) –commonly 1 shelve –full depth vs. half depth –sliding vs. fixed u Shelf limits –3/4” thickness preferred –3’-6” maximum length

Base Cabinet Kick Space u Methods used to finish the intersection at the base cabinet and floor –shoe –rubber top set or molding –cove floor

Shelving Hardware/Supports (handout)

Shelving Hardware/Supports u Methods used to be ready for the hardware/supports: –plow cut to groove shelf sides to receive hardware (shelf standard and support clip) –slots for standards –holes in pattern to receive support (pin shelf rest)

Cabinet Details (Shelves) u Note parts that make up detail –door –door stop –frame –cleat –shelf bracket –banded edge –scribe areas –soffit

Cabinet Elevation and Sections u Scale 3/4” = 1’-0” u Draft both elevation and sections u Instead of numbered keynotes, place the actual notes on drawing u Add all necessary dimensions u Place section keying on drawing
