Nervous System & Endocrine System PSYCHOLOGY Ms. Currey Ms. LaBaw

Goals 1. What are the parts and functions of a neuron? 2. Explain the process of neural transmission. 3. Explain the roles of neurotransmitters in neural transmission. 4. Identify and describe the divisions of the nervous system. 5. Discuss the nature and function of endocrine system communication.

Neurons The major building block of the Nervous system Exists only to perform three tasks: To receive information (electrochemical impulses) from other neurons that feed into it To carry information down it’s length To pass information to the next neuron in the line Main capability is to transmit an impulse, or ‘fire’ Everything you feel depends on exact sequences of neurons firing or not firing

Neurons Made up of: Dendrites Soma Axon Myelin Sheath Axon Terminal

How Neurons Communicate Neural Impulse Action Potential Refractory Period Resting Potential Ex: Flushing a toilet Communication Between Neurons Synapse Neurotransmitters Excitatory Inhibitory Neural Chain Receptor Cells Sensory Nerves Interneurons Motor Nerves

Structure of the Nervous System Central Nervous System (CNS) Brain Most of the information processing takes place here Spinal Cord The main pathway that information follows as it enters and leaves the brain Interneurons are responsible for processing information in the brain Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) (p105) Somatic Nervous System Autonomic Nervous System Sympathetic Parasympathetic

Endocrine System Includes a set of glands that produce hormones (chemical messengers) Slower to awaken and slower to shut down than the nervous system Pituitary Master Gland – Controls other glands Located at the base of the brain Other glands: Thyroid Adrenal Ovaries Testes Thymus

Review: Read pp for further review to help you answer: What is the major function of a neuron? What are the 5 major parts that make up a neuron? Explain a neural impulse. What are excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitters? What is the CNS made up of? What is the PNS made up of? What is the name of the ‘Master Gland’ in the Endocrine System, and what does it do? What is a hormone?
