Potential National Honor Society Members Meeting Rae Jean Johnson, Sponsor Fall 2013

Welcome and Congratulations! You are here because you have either a 3.6 unweighted GPA or a 4.0 weighted GPA.

What is NHS? National Honor Society is a national organization that recognizes students for their academic achievement in high school. It is MORE than academics, though. Members of NHS exhibit leadership in and out of school. NHS members are also people of excellent character who exemplify the very best traits of humanity. Additionally, NHS members are people who are willing to give of themselves and their time in the service of others.

Why should I join? Join to celebrate your success! Join to be part of a group that appreciates academic success, leadership, and service as much as you do. Join to be able to show colleges who you are (NHS is nationally recognized!)

What will I have to do? Continue making those grades. Continue being a campus leader. Continue being a person of good character. Continue serving others at school and in the community.

Expectations of Members Attend meetings twice monthly. Pay $10 dues once yearly. Turn in point sheets (of 100 points ore more) each six weeks. Complete 10 or more group service hours per semester. Complete 10 or more individual service hours per semester.

Becoming a member: Step One There are several steps toward becoming a member of the Northwest HS chapter of NHS. The first step is making the grades. Congratulations!

Becoming a member: Step Two The next step is to complete the background paperwork. This step involves a resume that details your academic progress, your extra- curricular involvement and your service to others. This step also involves writing an essay about your character and service. Instructions for these will be at the end of the presentation.

Becoming a member: Step Three This is the hardest part for students: waiting. Now you wait while these things happen behind the scenes. The faculty council blindly reviews your written work. The assistant principals review your discipline record. The faculty as a whole evaluates you in four categories: scholarship, character, service, leadership. The faculty council re-convenes to review the entire applicant packet (blindly again). Letters (or s) will be sent to all students informing them either that they are new members or that they are not new members.

What’s next? Students who are NOT accepted will have one week to appeal the decision. (An appeals process will be included in the letter.) Students who ARE accepted will begin the preparation for inductions.

Induction Ceremony It will be held in the PAC at 6:30 PM on November 14. More information will follow, but families are encouraged to attend.

The Resume Please see the example and more complete instructions on the National Honor Society web page listed under the extra- curricular tab.

The Essay Please see more complete instructions on the National Honor Society web page listed under the extra-curricular tab.

DEADLINE: OCT. 28, 4PM to room The deadline for submitting the resume and essay to Mrs. Johnson in room 2301 is Monday, October 28 at 4PM. You must print your own typed resume and essay. I WILL NOT PRINT ANYTHING! Bring the hard copies and the signed acknowledgement page at the same time. Electronic copies will not be accepted. Incomplete packets will not be accepted Handwritten work will not be accepted. NO ESSAY OR RESUME WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER THE DEADLINE!
