From “Hey You” To “Hey Lancto”: Building Rapport for Effective Teaching

My Question  What are effective measures for building rapport between students and teachers?

What the problem was…  Unsure SStrangers HHistory VS. English Why did I feel closer to my History students?

…The Answer Was RAPPORT  Current Events Allows for personal stories Creates a comfortable environment in the classroom Gives students the floor as well Made my teaching come alive Develops “inside jokes”  But was this teaching?

 “I argue with myself, You’re telling stories and you’re supposed to be teaching. I am teaching. Storytelling is teaching.” Frank McCourt Teacher Man

The Facts on Rapport  Ineffective teachers do not have the ability to establish rapport w/ students  Communication is IMPORTANT Sender and Receiver  Don’t be afraid to talk about yourself  FIND WHAT WORKS FOR YOU!!!

How I built Rapport  “We are teaching kids how to learn”  Take a genuine interest in your student’s lives  First Impressions are everything  SHOW THEM YOU ARE HUMAN  Coaching or any extra-curricular activity  Don’t start the lesson right away  Get away from your desk

Results  I was able to go from being referred to as “Hey you” to becoming “Lancto”  By implementing current events I established better rapport with my History students which made my teaching more effective.
