Forces and Motion Notes
Force- a push or pull on an object or by an object. Examples: pushing a pencil to write lifting a book lifting a book throwing a ball throwing a ball swinging a bat swinging a bat
Vector- an arrow that shows the direction and strength of a force. Longer= stronger ….A long arrow shows a strong force.
Net Force- total force exerted on an object.
2 equal forces in opposite directions Cancel each other out Object does not move. Net force=zero. Balanced Forces in opposite directions-
Forces in opposite directions. Object moves in direction as the strongest force. Net force is the difference of the forces. Unbalanced Forces in opposite directions-
Unbalanced Forces in same direction- Forces act together in the same direction Net force is the sum of the forces.
Friction- when 2 objects rub together and the force of 1 object is exerted on the other. Friction acts in opposite direction as the objects movement.
Inertia- tendency of an object to resist change in motion Example: A pencil will sit on your desk indefinitely if it never experiences a change in forces. A meteoroid will continue its motion in space unless it runs into something or gets pulled in by Earth’s gravity. A meteoroid will continue its motion in space unless it runs into something or gets pulled in by Earth’s gravity.
Newton’s First Law of Motion- An object at rest or in motion will not change unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.
