Making Healthy Food Choices

Words To Know! Starch – provider of long lasting energy. Fiber – plays important role in removing waste from the body Starch and fiber are complex carbohydrates.

Watching what you eat Baked chicken will give you all the nutrients of fried chicken but with less fat. Try steaming vegetables rather than boiling them. When vegetables are boiled they lose vitamins.

Limiting Certain Food Chocolate and rich food overload us with saturated fats. Ex: milk, butter, eggs, meat. It also contains much of cholesterol. Too much of cholesterol can lead to heart disease.

Reducing fat and cholesterol -Choose low-fat milk products -Avoid fried food -Choose low-fat desserts -Eat lean meat

Salt Salt controls amount of fluid in the body. Too much fluid can lead to excess fluid in our body, heart disease and high blood pressure.

Reducing salt -Cut down salty food -Eat less canned and packaged food -Buy food brands with less salt

Caffeine - speeds up body processes Ex: tea, coffee, chocolate. Too much of caffeine can cause your heart beat faster. People that drink too much coffee cannot fall asleep at night.

Sugar provides calories but few nutrients Sugar is great contributor to tooth decay. To reduce sugar you eat, cut back on foods with added sugars. Ex: soft drinks, candy, baked goods
