Do Now Briefly describe the most important reason teens should avoid drug use.

Reasons to be drug free Not break the law Better concentration Make wiser decisions Reach full growth potential Save money Healthier appearance Better control over actions and feelings

Kicking the habit If a person becomes physically or psychologically addicted to a drug, the recovery process involves withdrawal. Withdrawal-the physical and psychological symptoms that occurs when someone stops using addictive substances. Depending on the drug used symptoms include: vomiting, headaches, aches and pains, sweating, and depression.

Getting help Support groups- group of people who share a common problem and work together to help one another cope and recover. Ex. NA,AA Drug treatment programs-trained experts who provide education and support who can help the user through the withdrawal period. Detoxification-the physical process of freeing the body of an addictive substance. “Detox”

Treatment centers for Detox Detox units- usually part of a hospital or other treatment center. Addicts remain under a doctors care while going through withdrawal Inpatient treatment centers-places where addicts stay for a month or more to fully concentrate on recovery. Outpatient treatment centers-places where addicts can get treatment for a few hours each day. They return home to their regular surroundings.
