Description of Psychiatry Psychiatrists are medical specialists that diagnose and treat patients with mental health issues. Psychiatrists order and oversee diagnostic tests and procedures, formulate treatment plans and offer psychotherapeutic and medicinal treatment. Though often confused with psychologists, psychiatrists are different because of their ability to prescribe medication.
