2008 EPA and Partners Metadata Training Program: 2008 CAP Project Geospatial Metadata: Introduction Module 4: ISO 19115/19139 Metadata

EPA and Partners Metadata Training Program: 2008 CAP Project 2 Training Structure Agenda Introduction to the NAP and ISO19115/19139 Relationship to the FGDC CSDGM NAP/ISO Structure NAP/ISO Core Elements What’s next with the NAP Available NAP metadata editors NAP resources Materials FGDC-ISO Crosswalk More Details on introducing the NAP are available at: lessons#metadata

EPA and Partners Metadata Training Program: 2008 CAP Project 3 Learning Objectives After completing this module the student can: Describe what the North American Profile (NAP) of the ISO 19115/19139 standard is Describe how the NAP is related to the FGDC CSDGM Describe the basic structure of ISO19115/19139 and how this is similar to and different from the FGDC CSDGM Name at least three core elements of ISO 19115/19139 Identify key resources that will be available for use as the NAP is rolled out

EPA and Partners Metadata Training Program: 2008 CAP Project 4 ISO Geospatial Metadata Introduction to the North American Profile (NAP) of ISO 19115/19139 What is the NAP?  A ‘community profile’ of the ISO 19115/19139 standard  ‘Next generation’ geospatial metadata standard for Canada and US What is the ISO 19115/19139 standard?  International standard for geospatial metadata  Part of ISO19000 series ISO 19110: Geographic Information - Feature Cataloging ISO 19115: Geographic Information - Metadata. ISO 19136: Geographic Information - Geographic Markup Language ISO 19139: Geographic Information – Metadata XML Schema Implementation  It is implemented by ‘profiling’; hence the development of the ‘NAP’ CAN/CGSB USA FGDC CSDGM North American Profile Geospatial Metadata Based on ISO 19115/19139

EPA and Partners Metadata Training Program: 2008 CAP Project 5 ISO Geospatial Metadata What does the NAP do? Adopts the 22 ISO ‘core’ metadata for geographic datasets (core does not mean required) Increases conditionality for critical attributes Modifies code lists to reflect US/CA needs Creates new code lists for free text elements that are relatively standard in the US and Canada Will include best practices and simplified UML diagrams Why is it being developed? The international community developed and approved ISO  As a member of ISO, US must revise the CSDGM in accord with ISO Provides interoperability between US and international community Increases capabilities/flexibility for current needs CORE ISO ELEMENTS Community- specified Extended Elements ISO 19115

EPA and Partners Metadata Training Program: 2008 CAP Project 6 ISO Geospatial Metadata How is it related to the FGDC CSDGM? The standard is similar, but different  Structure FGDC CSDGM: sections, elements, and domains ISO19115: classes, subclasses, attributes, and domains Both require only the identification information and metadata information sections  Requirements ISO contains more fixed domains and code lists and fewer mandatory elements 22 core ISO elements; 7 mandatory ISO elements New terminology: Mandatory, Conditional, Optional  Elements Some added, some eliminated from FGDC CSDGM (see crosswalk: ISO-FGDC- METADATA-CROSSWALK-V41.xls [please see USGS website for most recent version])  Applicability ISO can be applied to a greater range of products, including non-geospatial products

EPA and Partners Metadata Training Program: 2008 CAP Project 7 NAP/ISO Structure ISO classes subclasses attributes domains requirements  mandatory  conditional  optional CSDGM sections compound elements elements domains requirements mandatory mandatory if applicable optional

EPA and Partners Metadata Training Program: 2008 CAP Project 12 ISO Geospatial Metadata What is planned for the NAP? Current status: final review Targeted completion in early 2009  standards#prepareforiso standards#prepareforiso May be called FGDC CSDGM version 3 Resources planned for roll-out:  translators  crosswalks  training  editors

EPA and Partners Metadata Training Program: 2008 CAP Project 13 ISO Geospatial Metadata Some key resources to make learning the NAP easier FGDC Website   Metadata/NAP_Metadata/ Metadata/NAP_Metadata/   (crosswalk) Presentation from 2008 ESRI Federal User Conference  ESRI Metadata Translator  _%28Conversion%29 _%28Conversion%29

EPA and Partners Metadata Training Program: 2008 CAP Project 14 NAP Quiz Which statement below is FALSE regarding the NAP and the FGDC CSDGM? A.The NAP is made up of classes whereas the FGDC CSDGM is made up of sections B.The NAP uses the term ‘conditional’ whereas the FGDC CSDGM uses the term ‘mandatory if applicable’ C.The NAP does not have an identification information section D. The NAP adopts the 22 ISO ‘core’ metadata for geographic datasets What is currently planned for roll-out of the NAP in order to assist users in making the transition? A.Translators B.Crosswalks C.Training D.Editors E.All of the above ISO Geospatial Metadata
