World Cultures

Why should we learn about different cultures?

The world is large and diverse. We are just a small part.

In the 21 century we are more connected now than ever before.

Immigration adds to the diversity of our nation.

Modern world economies are firmly linked. Major corporations and businesses are global.

By studying other cultures, we better understand our differences as well as discover similarities.

We can celebrate our strengths and learn from our mistakes.

Much can be learned about a culture through its dances. The history, beliefs, aesthetics, and values of a culture are all reflected in its dances.

We will discuss 3 types of World Dance Ritual Concert Folk

Ritual dances are part of rites and often have religious significance. They are formal and procedural.

Concert dance is presentational, performed before an audience.

Folk dancing is a recreational social activity where participation is broad. It encourages a sense of community.

World Cultures Essential Questions Why do people dance? How is dance related to culture? What are the common threads? What are the differences?
