Chapters 15 and 16

Let’s share our passages from Chapters 15 and 16 using the “Save the Last Word for Me” strategy. But first, let’s make some real world connections to the novel…

Are truth and happiness incompatible? How do we negotiate the two poles of Ignorance is bliss and Knowledge is power. Recall a time when you willingly chose ignorance over knowledge. What are the advantages of ignorance? When might this be the best choice?

What are the negative aspects of attaining knowledge? When can knowledge be a disadvantage? Consider this in terms of science, in particular.

Is it possible to live in a stable world without sacrifice? What did they sacrifice in the World State? What do we sacrifice in ours? STABILITY ?

What is apartheid? A policy or system of segregation or discrimination on grounds of race. You could say that Nelson Mandela stood for community, stability, freedom and identity. His purpose was to build one united nation under one flag, under one anthem in South Africa. He spent 27 years in prison and sacrificed a large portion of his life for stability.

What basic elements do we include in an argument? Counterargument? Why is this important? What would you need to acknowledge? What would you use to create logos? For tomorrow’s final exam, you will need at least two pieces of evidence from the text to support your claim about the cost of stability in the World State. How would you appeal to pathos? With a partner, find evidence from the text you could use to create logos. Mark these passages in your novel.
