Earth and the Moon 3 rd Grade Standard 1 objective 2 By Amy Johnson

MOTIONS OF THE EARTH Why seasons? The Earth is tilted on an axis, 23.5 degrees with respect to the earth’s orbit, and that is why we have seasons! In the summer our planet is farthest from the sun and in the winter it is closest. Earth is on it’s axis as we orbit the sun

True or False Even though we are closer to the sun in the winter, it is colder because of the earth’s axis TRUE FALSE

Correct !

Try Again!

Orbits and Rotations The earth orbits around the sun, and the moon rotates around the earth. We see the same side of the moon no matter where we are on earth because the moon has a synchronous rotation.

How long does it take for the moon to orbit the earth? It takes approximately 28 days for the moon to orbit the earth. This is where we get the term month.

Chose one that orbits in 365 days

Way To Go!

Oops, Try Again!

Why do Stars move across the sun? To us on earth, it appears that all the stars are moving across the sun. This happens because the earth is rotating while everything else in the sky is standing still.

Earth rotates to give us day and night The earth makes one complete rotation every 24 hours, this gives us day and night

Day and Night So when it is afternoon time for you, on the other side of the world it is the middle of the night!
