WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 30, 2013 AND THURSDAY, OCTOBER 31, 2013 Soul Moon Soup Sections 2 and 3

QUICK WRITE: READING RESPONSE #1  First, read your book for 15 minutes.  I will tell you when time is up.  Then, write about your book for 8 minutes.  Summarize the beginning of the book.  Who are the characters?  What is the book about?  Write a response to the beginning of the book.  Do you like the characters so far? Why or why not?  Is the book interesting? Why or why not?  Do you like the author’s writing style? Why or why not?

OBJECTIVE, AGENDA, & HOMEWORK  Objective: Students will analyze a topic (homelessness) by reading and citing textual evidence from a book (Soul Moon Soup).  Agenda:  Reading Time and Quick Write  Make Greek Root Flash Cards  Read Sections 2 and 3 of Soul Moon Soup with Questions  Homework:  Study Greek roots 1-18 for your quiz Friday.  Read minutes per night.

GREEK ROOT FLASH CARDS  Get 3 index cards from the front or use your own if you have them. You will need to get some of your own eventually.  Write the Greek root on one side.  Write the meaning of the root on the other side.  Draw one or more pictures that represent the meaning ON THE SIDE WITH THE ROOT.

SOUL MOON SOUP: SECTION 2 “MAMA COMES TO SCHOOL” TO “THE LAST BURDEN FALLS AWAY”  1. Find 3 similes from the book. Quote them and write the page numbers. Then explain what you learn about Phoebe’s experience and/or the experience of homelessness from the quotations.  2. How have Phoebe Rose and her mother come to be homeless?  3. Why can’t Phoebe’s mother get a job?  4. How will Phoebe’s mother react to the last burden falling away? Cite evidence with page numbers from the book to support your answer.

SOUL MOON SOUP: SECTION 3 “WHAT COMES NEXT” TO “LIFE AT RUBY’S PLACE”  Will Phoebe run away to find her mom? Why or why not? Support your answer with evidence and page numbers from the text.  Will Gram’s house become her real home? Support your answer with direct evidence from the text and page numbers.
