According to The Foundation Center ( /), there are over 86,000 foundations in the U.S. with $715 billion in assets, giving over $54 billion in / Independent/Private/Family: includes most of the nation’s largest foundations. Generally established by individual donors or donor families. (The Evjue Foundation, Goodman Foundation) Operating: primarily run their own programs, but some also make grants. (St. Mary’s Foundation) Corporate: established by businesses ranging from major corporations to family-owned shops; legally separate entities. (CUNA Mutual Foundation) Community: raises funds from the public. Engage in grant making primarily within a defined geographic area. (Madison Community Foundation) Foundation Giving
