Presentation transcript:

Objective: Finding surface area. Warm up 1. Use proportions to find the area of the shaded region.

Lateral Area

2. Identify the prism. a. b. c. A cross section is the shape you get when cutting straight across an object.

Find the Surface Area of a rectangular prism by decomposing its net into rectangles.

Example 1 a.Find the lateral area (L.A.) of the triangular prism. b.Find the surface area (S.A.) of the triangular prism.

Example 2 Find the lateral area and the surface area of the cylinder. Radius=3 in; height = 7in.

Example 3 Given the following square base pyramid: a. Draw a net for the pyramid above. b. Find the lateral area of the pyramid. c. Find the surface area of the pyramid.

Investigation: Lateral and surface area. I.Cylinder a.Cut out net for cylinder. Sketch the image of the solid. b.What is the shape of the base of a cylinder? c.Find the lateral area of the cylinder. d. Find the surface area of the cylinder.

II.Right Hexagonal Prism a.Cut out net for right hexagonal prism? Record the measure of the apothen, length of each side of the base, and height of the prism. b.Sketch the base of the right hexagonal prism with dimensions. c.Find the lateral area of the right hexagonal prism. a.Find the surface area of the right hexagonal prism.
