Automated Guided Vehicle By: Mario Martinez and Sam Wiener Period 7 Mr. Lawrence

What’s an AGV? An automated guided vehicle is a vehicle that is able to run by itself and perform specific tasks that does not require attendance of a worker. An Automated Guided Vehicle is able to do the things that it does because it is programmed by people to perform specific tasks and is guided by lasers, sensors, or vision by camera.

Who Created it?  The creator was Alfred Bean.  He created it in  He created it at Edgmin automation.  The first guided vehicle used was in the 1950’s and was used as a tow truck that followed a wire that was on the ground.  An inventor with a dream devised a method of automating the man- aboard tow truck that had been used in factories for years.  Random fact: In German, an automated guided vehicle is called Fahrerlose Transportsysteme.

History of the AGVs  The first AGV system was built and introduced in 1953  By the late 50's and early 60's towing AGVs were in operation in many types of factories and warehouses.  The first big development for the AGV industry was the introduction of a unit load vehicle in the mid 1970s. These unit load AGVs gained widespread acceptance because of their ability to serve several functions; a work platform, a transportation device and a link in the control and information system for the factory

HOW HAS IT CHANGED THROUGHOUT HISTORY? The first guidance system was created when sensors on the bottom of a tow truck looked for a magnetic field AGV systems existed at this level of technology until the mid-seventies The technology advanced to be utilized in unit load delivery, work-in-process production systems, and automotive assembly systems. Many systems today are being designed without the floor wire. Vehicles are now equipped with sophisticated computers on board to communicate, direct, and manage the system

AGV’s Used Today Agvs are used to make work more efficient, less costly, and easier
