AMSTI Circuits Lesson 14

Overview Semiconductor diode = allows electricity to flow in one direction Examples: battery chargers, radios, computers, and televisions Consist of cylindrical piece (functional piece) with a wire (connectors) coming out each end Arrow in symbol shows direction of electricity Colored band on one end of the diode corresponds to the direction of the current

Materials Box with batteries, battery holders, bulbs, bulb sockets, wires, and switch Diode 2 Fahnestock clips

Take apart flashlight Create a circuit tester using 2 batteries and one bulb and make sure the bulb works Give each pair of students a diode and touch it against the wires to test Look closely at the diode. What do you think might be the reason that some bulbs light and others do not? Reverse the way you put your diode on and see what happens

Introduce the symbol used to draw a diode. Draw a circuit diagram.

Extension Put the diode and your switch (used to make the flashlight) into the circuit using 2 batteries and one bulb. Can you connect it so the switch turns the light on and off?

The End!!!
