Shop Safety Introduction to Agriculture Mrs. Kirby

Rule #1 NO Horseplay – Under no circumstances is it appropriate to horseplay (rough or loud play). The shop is a very dangerous environment and one mistake can cause you or someone to get seriously injured.

Rule #2 You are NEVER allowed in the shop without Mrs. Kirby. Even if you have extension shop knowledge, this is a no-no because your agriculture instructor is responsible for what happens in the shop even when she or he is NOT there!

Rule #3 Wear your safety glasses at ALL times, even if you are not working with any kind of equipment. Failure to do so will result in detention and repeat offenders will be written up. When you enter the shop you must put safety glasses on immediately. For students with glasses, we have special safety glasses that will fit over top of your regular glasses.

Rule #4 Report all accidents or injuries no matter how small. Sometimes an accident may not seem like a big deal at the time and later on it can turn into a big deal. BiI BiI

Rule #5 Clothing – must wear closed-toe shoes, long pants (no flip flops, shorts, capris, dresses, etc.), and properly fitting clothing (no loose/sagging clothes). No jewelry – rings, bracelets, watches, necklaces, etc. This is to protect your body!

Rule #6 Always concentrate on what you are doing, don’t talk to others while operating equipment. M M

Rule #7 Before making a cut on a piece of wood triple check your measurements!!! You only get a certain allotment of wood and once your allotment is gone, you do not have anymore wood to work with.

Rule #8 If you need help, ask Mrs. Kirby. Do not ask another student to complete your project for you. This will result in a 0 for both students involved.

Rule #9 Always clean your work station. Sweep, pick-up nails, scrap wood, make sure your wood is where it is supposed to be. If something happens to your wood then you have to start over.

Rule #10 Always remember – SAFETY IS FIRST!

Rule #11 All hair must be pulled back or tied up in some way while in the shop. This is a safety precaution because your hair can get caught in equipment.

Rule #12 No cell phones and/or headphones are permitted at any time in the shop. If you are caught on your phone (this includes texting, checking the time, etc.) it will be confiscated and kept until the end of the school day or turned into the office for repeat offenders.

Rule #13 If you do not know how to operate a piece of equipment then DON’T!

Saw Blade How should the blades on your saw look? Tapered – to become gradually thinner at one end. Mushroomed – Sharp –
