INTRODUCTION What is Preventive Conservation? What are the job opportunities? What does the Preventive Conservator do? Why is it so exciting? How is the programme structured? What is Preventive Conservation? Preventive Conservation is all about caring for collections and involves understanding: The materials from which artefacts are made i.e. metal, glass, paper etc The way in which materials degrade The impact and management of the environment in storage, display & transit The demands of public access

What are the Job Opportunities? The job prospects are very exciting and include positions as Collections Care Managers or Preventive Conservation Officers caring for a wide range of collections both in the UK and abroad in: Museums and Galleries Historic Houses Private Collections

What does the Preventive Conservator do? The Preventive Conservator is involved in: Organising Exhibitions Planning and implementing Storage Co-ordinating couriers and transportation for loans Working with schools and planning education services Managing fundraising events such as corporate entertainment

Why is it so exciting? In Preventive Conservation you will have: First hand experience of beautiful, fascinating, wonderful objects The challenge of reconciling collections care with public access and fundraising A professional role that really makes a difference Possibilities of travel accompanying loans Opportunities to share and exchange your knowledge with others No two days ever the same

How is the programme structured? The programme has the following structure: Semester one is focused on learning the theory through lectures, assignments etc Semester two is a work based learning experience in a museum or gallery during which theory is translated into a working knowledge of practise Semester three is focused on developing and writing the dissertation

What does the programme involve? The programme is broken into specific areas covering: Materials and Techniques Collections Care Environmental Management Examination & Documentation Physics & Chemistry

How is the programme delivered? The programme delivery is very flexible and can be: Full time over one year on campus Full time over one year via the distance learning format Part time over two years via the distance learning format

What are the Advantages of Distance Learning? The advantages are: Economic - since students do not incur the expense of travel and subsistence in the UK and could even remain in employment should they select the part time option Cultural – since students can focus on the type of artefacts in their own country or collection Environmental – since students can focus on the environmental challenges in their own region

How much will it cost? Campus Based European Union Students - £ International Students - £ Distance Learning – full time European Union Students - £ International Students - £ Distance Learning – part time European Union Students - £ International Students - £

What Qualifications do I need? You will need: Either a first degree in the Humanities or Sciences Or appropriate collections care experience You will also need: Good written and spoken English A computer A digital camera

How do I apply? Applications can be made via a University representative or direct to the University The standard University application form must be completed & submitted Two academic references must be provided Interviews are not required
