Presentation transcript:

DE Science Elementary “5-Minute Prep” For Sound, Heat, and Light Light Color

Color – The Big Ideas Color is visible light of different wavelengths. A colored object reflects that color’s light waves and absorbs all others. A white object reflects all visible wavelengths. A black object absorbs all visible wavelengths. White light can be separated into light of different colors using a transparent prism. Ultraviolet and infrared light waves cannot be seen.

Color – Prior Knowledge Students have observed numerous colors in the world around them. They can use the FUN-damental, Sound, Heat, and Light, to review light. It will also be helpful if students have:Sound, Heat, and Light –used a large box of crayons or markers to create a colorful picture. –observed a natural rainbow.

Color – Common Misconceptions Colors appearing on soap films and oil slicks are reflections of rainbows. –Reality: The colors of soap bubbles and also oil slicks are due to thin-film interference. Just before a soap film breaks it stops showing color because it becomes too thin to produce interference. The primary colors for mixing colored lights are red, blue, and yellow. –Reality: The primary colors of light are red, blue, and green. It is very important to understand that mixing pigment and mixing light are not the same.

Color – Using DE Science Content When you close this presentation, you can review the following recommended resources for Color. Exploration: ColorColor Reading Passage: Dazzling DisplaysDazzling Displays Video: The Visible SpectrumThe Visible Spectrum Video: The Science of Light in the Real WorldThe Science of Light in the Real World Use the PowerPoint version of this presentation for hyperlinks to these resources or you can get to them through the browser or search feature.

Color – Instructional Ideas Provide a prism to a small group of students. –Have the group create a rainbow. –Each student should draw their observation in their science journal. Use the interactive glossary to compare and contrast the terms pigment and color.
