Dan Cheng Mar 6, 2014 QXF Instrumentation Trace Fabrication Update

Material Status 3/6/2014D. Cheng2 CERN has sent us 10 m (600 mm wide, ~65 ft 2 ) of their material for initial sets of traces to start with – GTS #DEVL L + Adhesive AS Apical AV – Good for 6-9 SQXF length trace IL/OL sets (depending on layout) Using material for 4 sets of HQ03-styles traces Still enough material to make at least 5 sets of SQXF traces LARP order was placed last week – 500 ft 2 ordered (46.5 m 2 ) – Material requires 10 week lead time for order – Expecting ~June 2014 delivery

Design Status, Practice Coil 1 3/6/2014D. Cheng3 SQXF Practice Coil 1 design complete – Negative mask order placed; artwork due back ~end of this week – Heater design is preliminary only Schedule estimate – Week of 3/10: Negative mask received – Week of 3/24: Receive Traces (HQ trace fab. may possibly bump this date) – Week of 3/31: QA’d traces ready for use* (*Pending decision on trace processing)

Images 3/6/2014D. Cheng4 Images that follow are taken from trace laid onto CERN (Roxie) model – Original VT fit was on FNAL (Bend) model – Confirms basic position of VTs on both models

3/6/2014D. Cheng5 Inner Layer Lead End VTA02 VTA05 VTA03 VTB08 VTA04

3/6/2014D. Cheng6 Inner Layer Ramp Detail Heater was cut away by 3 mm to clear ramp geometry (heater will need to be “jogged” in next designs)

3/6/2014D. Cheng7 Inner Layer VTA08 and SG Detail SG cutout window which now has >6 mm clearance to trace elements

3/6/2014D. Cheng8 Inner Layer Return End VTA06 VTA07

3/6/2014D. Cheng9 Outer Layer Lead End VTB02 VTB04 VTB03 VTB07

3/6/2014D. Cheng10 Outer Layer Return End VTB05 VTB06

Summary 3/6/2014D. Cheng11 SQXF Practice Coil #1 trace design complete – VT locations firm; heater traces are placeholders – Expect traces to be ready by end of March Only one trace set necessary for this iteration Traces for PC #2 and subsequent coils – Design on hold until heater design is clearer Future production status – Material ordered from GTS; ~June delivery expected – Currently have enough material for at least 5 additional sets of SQXF traces – Inside /Outside fabrication qualifications for trace fab. ongoing Including extra processing (plating, etc.)

QXF Coil Instrumentation Trace Options 3/6/2014D. Cheng14 StainlessLaminate Adhesive* Polyimide Thickness Notes Apical AV304 / 25 µm15 µm50 µmCurrently used in LARP coils; extensive 4 K data Apical NP304 / 25 µm15 µm50 µmHigher strength version of AV; not as much published data for 4 K Kapton MT304 / 25 µm15 µm50 µmHigh thermal conductivity polyimide, ~3x that of Kapton HN-equivalent at RT; 20% more expensive; only available in large quantities ($45k min. order) *Modified cross-linked epoxy system, AS 1084

Instrumentation Trace Fabrication Process 3/6/2014D. Cheng15 Design and print artwork (negative mask) Cut trace laminated material to length Cover conductive laminate with resist Expose resist under negative mask with UV light Wash the uncured resist from laminate Etch laminated material with cured resist pattern – Conductive layer covered by resist remains Remaining resist washed off by stripping agent

Instrumentation Trace Impreg. Preparations 3/6/2014D. Cheng16 Electrical QA Perforate polyimide layers Install during coil impregnation

Coil Processing: Impregnation Does CTD 101K epoxy exhibit acceptable radiation hardness? – What are the requirements? – What is the real data? Technical challenges for impregnation using Cyanate Ester blends (or other materials) must be overcome for long coils Instrumentation traces – Do laminated polyimide trace materials pose problems for impregnation? – Trace behavior (bubbles) on inside bore after testing cycle have continued 3/6/2014D. Cheng17 Bubbles on inside bore of LQS03 after magnet test Inside bore of HQ02a during assembly (Coil 15 was previously tested in HQ mirror)
