Relations and Functions

Graphing Functions A function is a set of ordered pairs in which NO two ordered pairs have the same x-coordinate. A linear function is a function that forms a straight line.

Measures of Central Tendency

Representing a Data Set An outlier is a number in the data that is vastly different from the rest of the data. Outliers can affect measures of variance and central tendency. –The range is affected by outliers because the maximum and/or minimum values lie farther apart. –The mean is affected by outliers because they pull the data upward or downward. –The median and mode may or may not be affected by outliers. To determine which measure of central tendency best represents a data set, compute each measure. Then, refer to the data and ask yourself which measure gives the best reflection of the data.
