Early Life Born: Woodrow Wilson Rawls Birth Place: Scraper, Oklahoma Born 1913 into an extremely poor family setting. No schools in the area so his mother taught him to read and write from the home. Rawls was influenced to write by Jack London’s “The Call of the Wild.” Rawls wrote through the Great Depression, but was too ashamed to share any writings because of grammatical errors.

Adulthood In 1958 Rawls got married, but before he did he burned all of his works that he thought of as failures. Wilsons’ wife Sophia eventually found out about his dream and encouraged him to pursue a career in writing Wilson published a three-part serial entitled, “The Hounds of Youth” which became the novel, “Where the Red Fern Grows.” In 1976 he published his final book, “Summer of the Monkeys.”

Later Life Even though his novels were praised items, it has been said that his motivational speaking was his true calling. He visited over 2,000 schools in 22 states talking about his life and how his writings all came about after he burned his manuscripts before his marriage. Rawls died in 1984 after a battle with cancer.

Facts about Rawls Took him three weeks to write the novel Where the Red Fern Grows. Lived in Cornell, Wisconsin Wrote five manuscripts which were eventually burned. One of the burned manuscripts was Where the Red Fern Grows and it was rewrote by Wilson after he told his wife of his “failures” and it became one his most popular books.
