1 Peter Class Schedule

12 Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal among you, which comes upon you for your testing, as though some strange thing were happening to you; 13 but to the degree that you share the sufferings of Christ, keep on rejoicing, so that also at the revelation of His glory you may rejoice with exultation. 14 If you are reviled for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. 15 Make sure that none of you suffers as a murderer, or thief, or evildoer, or a troublesome meddler; 16 but if anyone suffers as a Christian, he is not to be ashamed, but is to glorify God in this name. 17 For it is time for judgment to begin with the household of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God? 18 AND IF IT IS WITH DIFFICULTY THAT THE RIGHTEOUS IS SAVED, WHAT WILL BECOME OF THE GODLESS MAN AND THE SINNER? 19 Therefore, those also who suffer according to the will of God shall entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing what is right.

Summary of 1 Peter 4:12-19* 1.Suffering is normal v:12a 2.Suffering has purpose v:12b 3.Suffering is fellowship v:13 4.Suffering can be a blessing v: Suffering is a witness v:16 6.Suffering is timely v:17 7.Suffering is difficult v:18 8.Suffering is entrusting v:19 * adapted from McCalley

18 and if it is with difficulty that the righteous is saved, what will become of the godless man and the sinner? and if it is with difficulty that the righteous is saved and if* he who is righteous is with difficulty “being saved” (Wuest) note that the person is called “righteous” What are the three aspect of our salvation? see Eph 2:8, Rom 6:11, 1 John 3:2 Which aspect is being addressed in verse 18a? McCalley states that verse18a is telling us that the Christian life is accompanied by difficulty (trials and suffering) * assumed to be true “being saved” is present, passive, indicative

What does the idea of difficulty imply? difficulty – from the word for labor pains – therefore difficulty, also translated hardly or scarcely see Acts 14:18; Acts 27:7, 8, 16; Rom. 5:7 Since the Christians in Peter’s day were undergoing severe trials, this can be thought of as a difficulty which God allowed for their growth. Hebrews 12:7 It is for discipline that you endure; God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom his father does not discipline? 18 and if it is with difficulty that the righteous is saved, what will become of the godless man and the sinner?

what will become of the godless man and the sinner Rich man and Lazarus in Luke 16:20-25 Judgment of the nations in Matt 25:31-34 Great White Throne Judgment – Rev 20:11-15 the godless man (ungodly) and the sinner is used in other verses – see 1 Tim 1:9

19 Therefore, those also who suffer according to the will of God shall entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing what is right. therefore – based on the previous verses subject = those who suffer according to the will of God verb = shall entrust (or let them entrust) direct object = their souls to a faithful Creator modifier = in doing what is right

19 Therefore, those also who suffer according to the will of God shall entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing what is right. Subject: those who suffer according to the will of God 1 Peter 3:17 For it is better, if God should will it so, that you suffer for doing what is right rather than for doing what is wrong. also see 1 Peter 5:10 How do we know when we are not suffering according to the will of God?

19 Therefore, those also who suffer according to the will of God shall entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing what is right. Verb: shall entrust (or let them entrust) The word entrust (paratithami) is a banking term that means “to place on deposit.” (present, imperative, middle) Present tense – continuous action in the present Imperative mood – command Middle voice – for your benefit Wuest: be constantly committing see Luke 23:46, 2 Tim 2:2

19 Therefore, those also who suffer according to the will of God shall entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing what is right. their souls to a faithful Creator "Peter described God as the ‘faithful Creator’ - an unusual designation because only here in the NT is God called this.” McCalley souls - psychas - refers to our total persons in this case see 1 Peter 1:9, 22; 2:11, 25; 3:20 faithful – pistos - in the passive sense faithful or trustworthy 1 Corinthians 10:13 No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.

19 Therefore, those also who suffer according to the will of God shall entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing what is right. creator - ktistēs - in Homer the word meant to found a city or a habitable place. In the NT, to create, produce from nothing see Col 1:16, Rev 4:11 other verses about God’s faithfulness Matthew 27:50 And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit. Philippians 1:6 For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.

19 Therefore, those also who suffer according to the will of God shall entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing what is right. in doing what is right (or in doing good) Furthermore we should keep on doing what is right (e.g., submitting to government rulers, obeying masters, submitting to husbands, loving wives, etc.) rather than doing evil (v. 15). Constable How do we accomplish doing good?
