Istituto Professionale di Stato per i Servizi Commerciali, Turistici e della Pubblicità “Raffaele Gorjux”

The Istituto Gorjux is a vocational school for Tourism, Accountancy and Graphics and at the same time it’s a Resource Centre. Students from 14 to 19 attend the school which is located in the suburbs of Bari, the capital town of Apulia, a region situated in the south-east of Italy and rich in history and art and mainly devoted to tourism, agriculture and services.

Bari is on the Adriatic Sea and is the second most important economical centre of southern Italy after Naples. It has a population of about 350,000 inhabitants and is well known for its important port and university and for being the town of Saint Nicholas, whose rests are kept in a splendid Romanesque Basilica. Bari is made up of different urban sections: to the north there is the closely built old town on a peninsula with its modern harbour, the famous Basilica of St Nicholas, the beautiful Cathedral of St Sabino and the Swabian Castle, built by Frederick II; to the south there is the Murat quarter (erected by Joachim Murat) the modern heart of the city, which is laid out on a rectangular grid-plan with a promenade on the sea and the major shopping district (the via Sparano and via Argiro).

Modern residential zones surround the centre of Bari, the result of chaotic development during the 1960s and 1970s replacing the old suburbs that had developed outwards from the city walls. In addition, the outer suburbs have developed rapidly during the 1990s. The city has a redeveloped airport named after Pope John Paul II, Karol Woityla Airport, with connections to several European cities

The school is named after Raffaele Gorjux, a famous intellectual man that founded one of the most important newspapers of the south Italy called “La Gazzetta del Mezzogiorno “ and based in Bari.

The school is attended by more than 500 students coming from the city (50 % ) or from little towns of the metropolitan area ( 50% ). About 5 % are of different countries (mainly Albania and Mauritius islands)
