THE NATURE OF SCIENCE 1.1 WHAT IS SCIENCE?

THE GOALS OF SCIENCE 1. Deals with only the natural world. The supernatural is outside the realm of science

2. Collect and Organize Information

3. Propose explanations that can be tested

In summary: SCIENCE is a body of knowledge that explains the natural world.

IN YOUR NOTEBOOK Write: - 2 objective observations - 2 subjective observations - 2 qualitative observations - 2 quantitative observations about this photo.

Science begins with OBSERVATIONS Where’s Waldo?

Data = information gathered from observations Quantitative = a quantity, a number or measure Qualitative = a quality, description

INFERENCE - a logical interpretation based on prior knowledge * DRAWING A CONCLUSION

BELLWORK: In your notebook, write: - 3 observations - 3 inferences about this photo.

GO BACK IN YOUR NOTES FILL IN THE LEFT SIDE OF YOUR CORNELL NOTES. - IDENTIFY VOCABULARY WORDS - IDENTIFY THE GOALS OF SCIENCE COMPLETE YOUR SUMMARY ON OBSERVATIONS - (THE BOTTOM PORTION OF YOUR NOTES) - WHAT ARE OBSERVATIONS? - HOW ARE OBSERVATIONS USEFUL?

EQ: How do scientists work?

Scientific Method: 1) Ask questions, make observations 2) Gather information 3) Form a hypothesis 4) Set up a controlled experiment Imagine how you would test a particular fertilizer to determine if the fertilizer would grow taller plants.

HYPOTHESIS - a proposed explanation, must be testable Examples: 1. Purina food will reduce a dog's shedding. 2. Putting Miracle Grow on tomato plants will make them produce more tomatoes. 3. The drug Avapro will lower a person's blood pressure.

INDEPENDENT VARIABLE: Manipulated variable or experimental variable - the thing you change DEPENDENT VARIABLE: Responding variable - what you observe or measure

EXPERIMENTAL GROUP THE GROUP THAT IS BEING TESTED.

CONTROL GROUP THE GROUP THAT DOES NOT RECEIVE WHAT YOU ARE TESTING THIS GROUP IS WHAT YOU ARE COMPARING TO YOUR EXPERIMENTAL GROUP TO SEE ANY CHANGES

After you have designed your experiment: 5)Record and analyze results 6)Draw a conclusion 7)Repeat Does more fertilizer = better growth?

PLACEBO EFFECT SHOWING A CHANGE IN SYMPTOMS BECAUSE YOU BELIEVE YOU HAVE RECEIVED TREATMENT, WHEN YOU HAVEN’T.
