Lesson 2.6- Simple Probability and Odds, pg. 96 Objectives: To find the probability of a simple event. To find the odds of a simple event.

Vocabulary Probability: the ratio of the number of favorable outcomes for an event to the number of possible outcomes of the event. P(a)= number of favorable outcomes total number of possible outcomes Simple event: a single event. Sample space: the list of all possible outcomes.

Equally likely: outcomes for which the probability of each occurring is equal. Odds: the ratio that compares the number of ways an event can occur (successes) to the number of ways the event cannot occur (failures). ODDS = Successes Failures

Ex. 1: Find the probability of a simple event. a. Find the probability of rolling a number greater than two on a die. 4/6 or 2/3 b. A class contains 6 students with black hair, 8 with brown hair, 4 with blonde hair, and 2 with red hair. Find P(black). 3/10 or 0.3

c. A class contains, 6 students with black hair, 8 with brown hair, 4 with blonde hair, and 2 with red hair. Find P(red or brown). ½ or 0.5 d. A class contains, 6 students with black hair, 8 with brown hair, 4 with blonde hair, and 2 with red hair. Find P(not blonde). 4/5 or 0.8

Ex. 2: Finding the odds. a. Find the odds of rolling a number greater than two. 4/2 = 2/1 or 2:1 b. A card is selected at random from a standard deck of 52 cards. What are the odds against selecting a 2 or 3? 44/8 = 11/2 or 11:2
