City of Zagreb is faced with a continuous increase in the number of senior citizens Mobility is highly important for the quality of their lives Seniors were not in the focus of PT operator or City of Zagreb Transport office as a specific user group Background: before CIVITAS CIVITAS FORUM /9/14 Casablanca Lidija Pavic-Rogosic

Target group Recruited in cooperation with City Office for Social welfare Homes for elderly and seniors’ associations visited (500 participants) CIVITAS ELAN joined marking of International Day of Older Persons and Healthy week– additional beneficiaries + Public presentations Senior citizens - to encourage them to use more public transport CIVITAS FORUM /9/14 Casablanca Lidija Pavic-Rogosic

Workshops with senior citizens 17 workshops in different homes for elderly and their associations Participants: elderly persons + ZET drivers + traffic police +City department for traffic +City department for social welfare ODRAZ as moderator CIVITAS FORUM /9/14 Casablanca Lidija Pavic-Rogosic

What we do during workshops? a conversation related to their mobility needs and habits explanation on how to use new electronic tickets ZET drivers and Traffic police give recommendation for safety in PT vehicles and streets CIVITAS FORUM /9/14 Casablanca Lidija Pavic-Rogosic

Comments / recommendations There is a problem with bike path, which is directly in front of our elderly home We can not manage to cross the street as a green light lasts very short A lack of culture amongst the cyclist; the City should look for a solution to the problem of rushing bicyclists The lack of information about electronic PT ticketing system A need for more traffic lights with sound notification CIVITAS FORUM /9/14 Casablanca Lidija Pavic-Rogosic

Concrete results Based on a discussion during the workshop, reccomenations were sent to relevant institutions ► e.g. together with a traffic police a proposal for better solution at one crossroad to be more user friendly was sent to a City office for traffic CIVITAS FORUM /9/14 Casablanca Lidija Pavic-Rogosic

Workshops in ZET depot for elderly on how to use PT safely and gain confidence Workshops on safety of elderly in PT with tram and bus drivers 4 workshops with more then 160 drivers to be more sensitive and responsive to elderly passangers CIVITAS FORUM /9/14 Casablanca Lidija Pavic-Rogosic

The leaflet a leaflet with practical advices for seniors on how to use PT – distributed at events  the first of the kind Elderly friendly: big letters pictures simple explanations CIVITAS FORUM /9/14 Casablanca Lidija Pavic-Rogosic

International Day of Older Persons 29 September opportunity to distribute practical guidelines for safer use of public transport for elderly people well accepted by seniors Mayor of Zagreb CIVITAS FORUM /9/14 Casablanca Lidija Pavic-Rogosic

Short educational film A short film „Alojz and Vlatka” and their behaviour while using PT Gg4Zn9g Excellent feedback from elderly people during workshops Attracts the interest of media CIVITAS FORUM /9/14 Casablanca Lidija Pavic-Rogosic

Media and Safety of elderly in PT To raise awareness of public and seniors  elderly people and PT drivers as main characters three TV reportages on elderly and safety in PT (including short film, interview with bus driver) web articles written articles CIVITAS FORUM /9/14 Casablanca Lidija Pavic-Rogosic

Triggers ORGANISATIONTRIGGER ElderlyWant to be heard by institutions Want to have better mobility conditions City office for social welfare New approach to their beneficiaries Homes for elderlyCare for seniors’ safety ZET (PT provider)New approach for specific beneficiary group that is growing Traffic policeCare for citizens’ safety, including seniors who are vulnerable group City office for trafficImproved solutions in traffic, less accidents ODRAZPublic participation and cooperation with local government - involve seniors in the process

Working with the target group Seniors showed appreciation, in particular emphasising the attention given to them - not as a part of problem, but as a part of mobility solutions Lessons learned: new angle to the issue is worth trying - sometimes small interventions could contribute to the quality of life for senior citizens special attention should be put on growing stakeholder group of seniors by ZET- they represent an important public transport users CIVITAS FORUM /9/14 Casablanca Lidija Pavic-Rogosic

Elderly willing to participate in mobility dialoge - they know specific problems in their neighbourhood and think about possible solutions Trust should be built - many citizens, including elderly, do not believe that they can influence decision-making Those involved were satisfied for the opportunity of gathering together and discussing issues of common interest Concrete initiatives emerged What we found out? CIVITAS FORUM /9/14 Casablanca Lidija Pavic-Rogosic

Conclusion Mobility behavioural changes among elderly require: Empowerment - enhancement of their capabilities so that they can engage and influence the institutions that affect their mobility Inclusion - removal of institutional and physical barriers  increase access and safety in PT Safety and security - lowering of vulnerability through reducing risk Challenges: sustainability after the end of the projects
