Lesson 4: Manipulating Sound

Last lesson we learned how to manipulate/fake images. Sounds can be manipulated or faked, too. READ the Introduction and Step 4.1 on page 7 of your Student Book.

Know that information can be presented and manipulated in a variety of ways, and that this can lead to misunderstanding or deception Understand how to edit pre-recorded sounds Be able to manipulate sound using Audacity in a variety of different ways

Listen to the three sound files (CD Resource 4a). Can you spot the difference between the recordings?

Import sound files Cutting & Pasting sound

Mix up the route, by editing the recording and cutting & pasting the place names. Follow the instructions in your book carefully.

Why does it sound strange? How has it been changed? Use the Effect Tool to change the sound back to its correct version.

Why does it sound strange? How has it been changed? Use the Pitch Control to change the pitch so that you can understand the message.

Experiment with some of the other effects and create another sound file that is disguised in some way.
